White metal, silver plating, stamping. The original medal is in a good collector's condition. On the front side there is a shoulder image of the emperor with a circular inscription: "B. M. Nicholas I Emperor and Autocrat of All Russia.". On the reverse side, a wreath of oak leaves is depicted in a circle, tied at the top and bottom with a ribbon, as a symbol of civil valor, inside a large horizontal inscription: "For the salvation of those who perished." It was awarded on a wide neck ribbon of the Order of St. Vladimir. The diameter is 30 mm.
The medal was awarded "for exploits of humanity, committed at the risk of their own lives, but not suitable for the action of the order's statutes." On April 17, 1828, on the basis of the Regulations of the Committee of Ministers approved by Emperor Nicholas I, the silver medal "For the Salvation of the Lost" was established. This medal was awarded to Russian citizens for saving people under various tragic circumstances: during fires, natural disasters and the like. The diameter of the medal is 50 mm .
Nicholas I was a great lover of establishing new awards or introducing variants of existing ones. On February 20, 1834, the gold and silver medals "For the Rescue of the Dead" with a diameter of 29 mm were established. The silver medal was awarded to representatives of all classes and ages (including children) of the Russian population who "performed a feat of humanity at the risk of their own lives" while saving one person. A gold medal was awarded for the rescue of several people. On the obverse side of the medal there was a right-facing image of Nicholas I, on the shoulder there was a small monogram of the master "K" (Alexey Klepikov), around the circumference there was an inscription: "B. M. Nicholas I Imp. All-Russian.".
In 1894, a larger image of the emperor appeared on the obverse of the medal than on the previous samples. This is Nicholas II. Due to the enlargement, the circular inscription is divided into two parts and reads: "B. M. Nicholas II Emperor" - on the left, "and the autocrat of All Russia." - on the right. On the reverse side, three intertwined branches were depicted on the bottom left: palm, oak and laurel, the inscription "For the salvation of the lost" was made in two lines and shifted from the middle to the right - up. A medal with a diameter of 29 mm is replaced by a 30-millimeter one, and a large medal is minted only from silver. In 1904, on a small medal, the word "salvation" is replaced by the word "salvation". In 1915, based on the Regulations of the Council of Ministers, the diameter of the small medal was reduced from 30 mm to 28, and the thickness of the disc was also reduced. The gold medal contains only six hundred parts of pure gold. There is also a silver medal with a diameter of 27 mm. On the reverse side, the word "salvation" is again minted. In 1916, medals ceased to be minted from gold and silver. Instead, they appear from yellow (bronze) and white metal with a diameter of 30 mm with the word "salvation", as well as white metal with a diameter of 30 and 27 mm with the word "salvation". The medal described above was intended to be awarded for saving people in various disasters.
