Interesting medal with a very unusual stamp. Made of bronze. The diameter of 50 mm.

History

The main event of the battle of Gangut was a battle of the Russian rowing boats with a detachment of Swedish ships of Erensheld in the Rilaks fjord, held 295 years ago, July 27, 1714 (old style). The Swedes squadron consisted of 18 gun frigate, 6 galleys and 3 Shcherbatov, which had adopted a total of 116 guns. Peter I ordered to allocate to attack the enemy 23 odnopestichnyj scampavia, despite the fact that the Swedes had a numerical superiority in artillery and vysokovoltnyi ships that it was difficult to grapple with. During a three-hour intense battle Russian captured all the Swedish ships, along with the commander rear Admiral Erensheld. The result of Gangut victory of the Russian fleet which had established complete domination in the Gulf. The captured Swedish ships were brought to Petersburg, where on 9 September 1714, a solemn meeting winners. Peter I appreciated the victory at Gangut, equating it to Poltava.

Participants in the battle received a variety of awards: "the staff and Ober-officers for the service he was awarded medals, each in proportion to his rank, and the rank and file of silver medals and money."
On the obverse of all medals was placed a portrait of Peter I, and reverses the image of the sea battle and the inscription: "Diligence and fidelity superior to the bigger than 27 July 1714". Initially, it was made for distribution 193 1000 gold and silver medals that were all the same weight, and gold different: three weighing 100 hearts, four of 70, eight of 45, twenty-one in 30, fifty, 11, 7 seventy ducats. Some of them relied circuit: three 50 ducats, five, 30, 25, eleven, twenty-one and forty 20 15 coins.

In November of 1714 were distributed to three "Brigadier" coin weighing 45.coins and chain them 50 ducats each (Volkov, Zmajevic and Lefort), one "Colonel" medal with chain 30 of the coins (Againsome), four "podpolkovnichyu" ("Maori") in 15 h, with chains 30 gold pieces, two "captain" at 11 and chain them 25 ducats (guards officers and officers of the battalion galley) and nine medals in seven ducats, without chains (guards non-commissioned officers and Junior officers of the army regiments); it was also distributed to 226 silver medals "the Preobrazhensky regiment, the corporals and grenadiers and soldiers and other ranks".
