Photo of ensign with a rare set of characters for excellent shooting

The rank of ensign in the early twentieth century was a kind of intermediate between the lower ranks and officers. Since 1906 it has been attributed long-commissioned officers, who served in a blameless non-commissioned officer rank for at least two years and pass the corresponding exam. The ensigns were usually held the positions of sergeants in the infantry and foot artillery, and Vakhmistrov in the cavalry. Contemporary categories of military personnel to the closest ensigns are commissioned officers, but only those who do serve in combatant positions.
