Volume three. Book first. The first edition of Creatures of St. John Chrysostom translated into Russian language. The journal was published as the Appendix to the journals of the"Church messenger" and "Christian reading". John Chrysostom was the most anciently revered Christian writer in Russia. The teachings and interpretations written by St. John and assigned him the authority, was a favored soul-saving reading of Russian Orthodox Christians thanks to the beauty and emotion, credibility and depth of these texts that clarified major problems of Christianity and was given the answers to the spiritual issues of God-building. None of the Greek fathers of the Church did not leave such a vast literary heritage and was not able to cover such a variety of topics, like John Chrysostom, who owns almost 900 works. The nickname "Chrysostom" stuck him with the middle of VI century soon after his death, the teachings of St. John began to translate into various languages: Latin, Syriac, Armenian, Georgian, Coptic, and Arabic, and later in old Church Slavonic and old Russian.

The majority of the works are recorded by ear and edited personally by St. John of the oral sermon. Sometimes these speeches were carefully prepared, and sometimes uttered off the cuff, without preparation. Almost all sources describe the manner public preaching of St. John as "daring". With the same Verve and persuasiveness of the preacher and the theologian said "inconceivable", fought against heresies, he instructed them to devote more time to reading spiritual books or to resist drinking and other destructive temptations. His teachings concerning the spiritual creation of man, imbued with psychological insight and deep knowledge of the undercurrents of the human soul. In addition, in the writings of Chrysostom's thought is unfolding in the broader historical context of the first centuries of Christianity, the interests and needs of the people of that time, the ideological struggle of different parties. During long-term training, and self-portrait studies in the period of seclusion of St. John Chrysostom excellently studied the Scripture. All his works are permeated with explicit and hidden quotations from the sacred texts. It has been estimated that Chrysostom quotes about 7000 quotations from the old Testament and about 11,000 are from the New Testament.

The content of the speech and the preaching of St. John Chrysostom are divided on dogmatico-polemical, exegetical, pastoral and catechetical, moral and ascetic, festive, autobiographical texts, and sermons on different occasions. In addition to oral sermons, John Chrysostom belong the treatises of dogmatic, pastoral and moral-ascetic content, letters, and Church documents — letters, resolutions, decrees, compiled in the period, when St. John was led by the Constantinople diocese.

Copies of the edition originally published in small editions, slightly surpassing the number of subscribers of the magazines "Church messenger" and "Christian Reading", currently found in the set very rare. This is due to the initially high price of the publication. Each volume cost three rubles without binding. For subscribing to the magazines readers were given a rather large discount on the purchase of publications, but the subscription had to be renewed more than ten years, so not all copies were originally complete and interwoven that it is improved in the future, their safety. On the other hand, this edition was sought after and read much more than the works of any other of the fathers of the Church. Books were read and passed from hand to hand soon after release. 70 years of Soviet rule has also resulted in many instances.
