Description

An original and very rare document, personally signed by King Henry III of France (1551-1589, King of France in 1574-1589) on March 10, 1585. Compiled in Middle French.

The text of the document reads as follows: "Monsieur de Saint Goart je vous prie presenter a notre saint pere le pape les lettres que presentement j'ecris a sa saintete, et suivant icelles tenir main et vous employer envers elle que son bon plaisir soit a ma nomination priere et requete admettre la resignation que Mr Geoffroy de la Martonnye, prieur du prieure conventuel et electif Saint-Etienne du Perat, ordre Saint-Augustin, diocese de Perigueux, veut et entend faire de son dit prieure en faveur de Me Helye Patris, et en ce faisant, le pourvoir dudit prieure, lui actroyant et faisant expedier toutes et chacune les bulles, dispenses et provisions appliquees qui pour ce lui seront necessaires, suivant les memoires et applications, concordats et procurations qui en seront presentees a sa dite saintete. Et vous me ferez service bien fort agreable en ce faisant, priant Dieu Monseur do Saint Goart, qu'il vous ait en sa sainte garde, ecrit a Paris le dixieme jour de Mars 1585." (translation: "Monsieur de Saint Goart, I ask you to present to our Holy Father the Pope those letters, which I am currently writing to His Holiness, and, following my instructions, shake his hand and ask him to be pleased with my prayer appointment, and I ask him to accept the resignation of Mr. Geoffroy-de la Martonnier, abbot of the monastery and abbot of the monastery, elected to Saint-Etienne-du-Perat, Order of Saint-Augustin, Diocese of Perigueux, I want and intend to make Helier Patrice my designated abbot and, thus, appoint him as the designated abbot, acting on him and sending all and every letters, permits and applicable provisions which he will need for this, in accordance with the memoranda and requests, concordats and powers of attorney that will be presented to his so-called saint. Written in Paris on the tenth day of March 1585."). Monseigneur de Saint-Goar – captain, confidant of the King, Ambassador of France to the Holy See in Rome at the end of the XVI century. Under the text is the handwritten signature of Henry III. Minor stains and paper kinks around the perimeter. Size 255*355 mm. A wonderful gift with almost 500 years of history. It has a high cultural and museum value.

History

Henry III of Valois (French: Henri III de Valois, Polish. Henryk Walezy (September 19, 1551, Fontainebleau — August 2, 1589, Saint-Cloud) was the fourth son of Henry II, King of France, and Catherine de' Medici, Duke of Angouleme (1551-1574), Duke of Orleans (1560-1574), Duke of Anjou (1566-1574), Duke of Bourbon (1566-1574), Duke of Auvergne (1569-1574), King of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from February 21, 1573 to June 18, 1574 (formally until May 12, 1575), from May 30, 1574 the last king of France from the Valois dynasty.
